Refers to a world that has been colonized by a sophontic species. A colonial world can be one where no life existed previous or where no sophontic life existed or where a sophontic species has been conquered by invaders.
Colonial worlds often develop cultures and sometimes even physiologies that diverge from their point of origin. The problems that colonization cause for centralized power can be considered a near-universal theme of sophontic civilization. Some become embroiled in civil wars, others maintain only soft power in far-flung colonies, and still others are able to adequately manage expansive empires with minimal fuss.
